Front placement makes it comfortable to unlock on the desk but much less so when you're actually holding the phone, especially if you have a big one.
And to answer how to unlock the phone when it's placed on the desktop... Come on, just press the power key on the side (or double tap the screen) and enter the password! Moreover, if you delete locksettings.db you don't even need that password!

I come from the future to tell you that most flagship phones now have it on the front... but under the display, and the side mounted option has proven to be the best fingerprint solution with users evaluating its high accuracy and reliability, unfortunately large companies are not manufacturing their phones with side mounted due to costs, and those companies are not satisfied cutting costs, they also need to be cheap about it. Sorry for my terrible English.
