No, Apple being late to the show had nothing to do with some screen coating. Tim Cook became so impressed with all passport style foldables during a trip to China and realized that Apple need to have the same.

Oppo Find N7 released 6 months ago has a less visible crease and they didn't have to resort to crappy matte coating. Look at the crease on the duo 🤣

I own a Z Fold 8 Ultra, almost everyone at work are iPhone users. Not one of them noticed the crease when I let them use my phone.

I have to admit that Apple’s presentation got me too. The “Apple magic” worked on me, especially the beautiful animation when opening the inner display. A few days later, though, after thinking about it a bit more, the magic has made room for reality again. Apple can’t perform miracles either.

Regarding the points in the image above:

1. Dust resistance: IP68 is certainly a plus, but the Pixel 10 and 11 Pro Fold also have IP68, and in real-world testing the results regarding dust and the hinge have been rather disappointing.
2. Under-display selfie camera: Yes, it disappears beautifully. The trade-off is that the image quality is significantly worse. That’s not necessarily an advantage.
3. Less visible crease: The crease may be less noticeable, but the textured display surface also makes the screen look less vibrant to me, especially with photos and video. Again, that’s a trade-off, not simply an improvement.
4. Better multitasking gestures: That’s subjective. Personally, I would argue that Android’s multitasking on foldables is still clearly better.
5. Native multi-screen and window-size support: Apple may have a more tightly controlled ecosystem, but the claim that Android foldables are prone to crashing doesn’t match my experience at all. I used a Galaxy Z Fold 5 for a long time and didn’t experience a single crash.
6. Clever UI design / dock placement: Maybe. But if you naturally hold your phone in your left hand, moving the dock to the other side can actually be a disadvantage.

So I think the interesting question isn’t whether Apple has finally “solved” foldables. It’s how these design decisions will feel after people have actually been using the Duo for some time.

I’m genuinely curious to see what long-term reviews from creators will look like once the initial Apple magic has worn off.
