I'm waiting for the inevitable teardown videos. That would tell everything we need to know.

"The display on the iphone duo bla bla bla"

Ummm...screen manufactured by SAMSUNG. "oh but it is better" You really think Samsung electronics would allow Apple to have a better screen than what is on THEIR own devices, considering THEY make the screens?

Samsung Display Corp (SDC) does make both displays for the Duo and the Z Fold 8. But they are not the same display generations.

”Apple's newly released iphone Duo utilizes Samsung Display's newest cutting-edge M16 OLED panel material set integrated with polarizer-free Color on Encapsulation (CoE) technology.

While the Z Fold 8 relies on an older M13 organic material set to keep production costs down and maintain a thin chassis, Apple opted for a premium, custom-tailored implementation of Samsung's latest display generation.

Key Advancements: M16 (iPhone Duo) vs. M13 (Galaxy Z Fold 8)

Three Generations of Material Evolution: The Galaxy Z Fold 8 uses the M13 material set, which originally debuted in 2024.

• Apple's M16 panel leaps forward by using next-generation organic chemical layers. This offers superior luminance efficiency (no polarizer layer needed), significantly lower power consumption (30% less), and longer diode lifespans (20-30% longer) compared to the aging M13 chemistry.

• Polarizer-Free CoE Architecture: Traditional displays like the Z Fold 8's M13 use a physical circular polarizer film to prevent glare from outdoor light. The iPhone Duo’s M16 panel replaces this entirely with Color on Encapsulation (CoE). By printing color filters directly onto the thin-film encapsulation layers, it controls reflections without needing a thick polarizer layer. This design enables a thinner folding profile and allows maximum light to escape, vastly improving power efficiency.

Significantly Higher Panel Rigidity: According to display teardowns tracked by Engadget, Apple's custom M16 implementation features 40% higher structural stiffness than the industry standard folding panels. This added rigidity acts as a durable foundation for China's Lens Technology to lay down the phone's signature matte nano-texture glass layer, masking the physical screen crease far better than the Fold 8's glossy substrate.

Sharper Resolution Targets: While both displays share a 7.6-inch form factor, the Duo’s custom panel resolves at a sharper 1878 x 2670 pixels compared to the Z Fold 8's 1848 x 2448 pixels, translating to better overall pixel density and finer text rendering.

From Phone Arena, Sept. 11:

“Apparently, Apple has signed a multi-year deal with Samsung Display for the foldable panel of the iPhone Duo and any future iPhone model with a foldable display.

Samsung has been supplying OLED panels for Apple for quite some time now, but it's interesting to see the Korean company giving its best display panel to the biggest Galaxy Z Fold 8 competitor. Speaking of the best display panel...

The iPhone Duo is the first smartphone to use SDC’s M16 OLED (display).” And Apple is paying $250/inner display to use the M16 technology to Apple’s specification.

Why did Samsung keep using the M13 for Z Fold 8?

  • Performance Ceiling & Efficiency: Industry reports indicate that modern mobile displays have reached a practical performance peak. The M13 material set already easily hits the massive 3,000 nits of peak brightness, features energy-efficient LTPO variable backplanes (1Hz–120Hz), and limits battery consumption effectively.
  • Market Saturation & Cost: In the highly saturated premium mobile landscape of 2026, graduating to newer, significantly pricier material sets (like the M14, 15 and now 16) for the main foldable screen would radically drive up Samsung Mobile’s production costs without offering a substantial, consumer-facing leap in display performance or translating directly into higher sales volume. The M13 through 3 generations of improvements is now “cost optimized” in production and yields vs performance.

In other words, IMO, it’s good enough and cheap cost efficient enough to maintain a lower price for the Z Fold 8. The Z Fold 8 Ultra uses the M15 panel so I guess it gets the best display they would pay for. Supposedly the S27 Ultra & Pro will use the M16, and S27/27+ the M14.

Inside screen scratching is a real problem for all foldables, and it's not surprising that the only Apple Pencil that will work with it DOES NOT support pressure sensitivity. They could have offered external pencil cradles to use the Gen 2 and Pro with the Duo, but they DON'T want users gouging it trying to draw thick broad lines on that sensitive inside screen.
