Fact check: Huawei Pura X was released in 2025, not in 2026.

Still not sure about foldables as the future dominating form-factor, but wide candybars will be huge!

Call me crazy, but I think the iPad Mini is the perfect phone form factor. Fits in the front pocket, screen space for productivity, long battery life, finger print ID. I wish they’d make a Pro version to get the LiDAR sensor. But for creatives and people in the industries like construction, it would be awesome.

The form factor seems to maximize usability across most application types and formats of consumption habits with as small of a diagonal footprint as possible. Phone's grew tall after the IPhone X/Galaxy S8 released back in 2017 or whenever and companies never went back because the trend had 2 things going for it; the first was that it inflated the spec sheet right where people cared (screen size, back then, was the proverbial d*** size of phones) without making the device too wide to hold in one hand, and, secondly, social media formats and diversity were in exploding. The 2010-2015 era was "do you have a Facebook" while 2015-2020 saw many smartphone users having 2-5 social media platform applications downloaded and being used on a daily/nearly daily basis. This type of consumption (media feeds) is what elongated aspect ratios are best at. Some of these devices ended up being 21:9 or even slightly taller IIRC!

Devices like that excel at scrolling feeds and watching theater grade media, that's about all (I guess one could say they do well with running 2 apps at the same time in portrait orientation). 16:9-ish devices can do all sorts of things well and I'm, personally, all for them making a comeback to some degree! I think the industry would be a lot better off with some more variety in aspect ratios.

I think a great way to do the "wide aspect ratio device" would be to make a mini and a plus variant at a certain price point or tier (i.e. premium/midrange/budget). Most companies will hone in on that in-between size. Making two that fit between the far ends of the 5" and 7" range with narrow bezels would give people their choice of 1 or 2 handed formats with that aspect ratio/form factor definition. I can see both selling quite well to a variety of folks!
