Discussion - Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro: Sample Photos Comparison

Thanks for your heartfelt & warm comment and I'm glad you agree, or at least partly agree with my viewpoint.

Some people may argue that ultrawide camera is not so important for a phone. After all, who will be stupid enough to shoot using an ultrawide in low light conditions? But I want to say, that may be true on a vanilla or a Pro, but not on an Ultra. On many cases, people forget or neglect to take into account the ultrawide performance on cameraphones and when this situation/trend is taken advantage of by certain (or even majority of) cunning phone manufacturers, they can silently lower MFG cost by using smaller and cheaper sensors for their ultrawides while never mention this disadvantage during their launch events of their phtography-focused flagships.

For me, an Ultra should not make compromise for whatever reason on ANY of its cameras or any focal lengths. Otherwise, it makes no sense for me to spend something like +30% over Pro variant for only marginally better photography capabilities while having to accept a crippled/compromised ultrawide cam. For me, a good ultrawide camera is very important as I often rely on it to take photos of:

• The interior of a building/museum/studio
• Groups of a number of people at a close distance
• The exterior of buildings when shooting at a close distance
• Overview of a natural reserve, etc...

On these occasions, a good ultrawide will come in handy in capturing detailed, distortion-controlled, colour-accurate and noise-free pictures regardless of ambient light conditions.

As an example, I'm now using a Vivo X100 Ultra, and I'm pretty happy with the performance of its main (1" Sony IMX989 sensor) and zoom camera (1/1.4" Samsung HP9 sensor), but I the phone just struggles to produce satisfactory images on its ultrawide cam (which utilizes 1/2" Sony LYT-700 sensor which is still larger than Xiaomi and Oppo counterparts). The images produced by the ultrawide are soft even in good lighting conditions and suffers more detail loss in low light conditions. But this "Achilles' Heel" is thoroughly eliminated when Vivo switched for a 1/1/28" Sony LYT-818 sensor for UW on X200 Ultra and X300 Ultra. Even in good lighting conditions, the advantage of a bigger UW sensor can be noticed when producing images with much more detail, let alone shooting in the dark when the massive sensor is able to absorb tons of light.

If there should be a 2TB model on Vivo X300U, I would immediately buy one without any hesitation, just for a better ultrawide! 😆

This could be a silly question, but is the Ultrawide for night shots a new phenomenon that they're better? I haven't went through all of my old phones yet, but I did pull out my Pura 70 Ultra yesterday, and on that one, the main camera does way better than the ultrawide. But if I remember correctly, that one had the biggest sensor under the main camera and that is why that one popped out. (The mechanical camera pop out was cool, but felt like a gimmick). When I get my Xiaomi fixed, I'll try the comparison with it too.

I regretted spending 25% more than a Vivo X100 Ultra to have bought a Pura 70 Ultra in May 2024 for my dad (the decision was made because he used an Honor so I thought switching to a Huawei will be easier).

When I bought and tried my Vivo X100U in Jun, I found Pura 70U's photography capabilities so disappointing that it even could not beat Vivo X100U which is 25% cheaper. Even the main retractable (u're right it indeed is a gimmick) lense cannot match the 1" LYT-900 on the Vivo, let alone its ultrawide, whose sensor is so tiny that the images produced in low light look like nothing but s..t. And P70U's zoom camera is no match for the 200MP 1/1.4" Samsung HPB sensor either. 😞

I really should have bought a Vivo X100U for my dad back then. 😕

Have you ever tried Xiaomi? Not for low light but in General? I actually like my Xiaomi Ultra 17 Leica Edition better than Vivo X300 Ultra for some shots, and Vivo better for other. It's hard to explain. I had a long chat with ChatGPT about it. haha The thing I remember most is for zoom shots, Vivo makes them "Prettier" where Xiaomi makes them more realistic. I never tried Vivo back then. I thought the Pura 70 Ultra did WAY better than Samsung or the Xiaomi Ultra 14.
