out of curiosity, how does android apps compare...do they have the same sizing issues? thanks. btw this story has certainly put a dampener on my fold desires as I imagine most of the apps I use aren't going to be rushing to update

It is worth noting that this issue isn't exclusive to the iPhone; my Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra faces the exact same problem with (key words) unoptimized apps.

This was my experience when using an iPad for a few years. Most apps are ok, but every once in a while you get an unoptimized one and it just looks like someone put an iPhone app in the middle of the iPad with black screen all around. It's been 8-9 years since I turned on that old iPad. Looks like Apple has not learned since then, and is still up to their same ol' same ol'

It's worth noting that Samsung faces this exact same issue with its Fold series. Even today, many older or less popular apps remain unoptimized, leading to a messy experience where only mainstream apps look truly polished on the larger screen.

The problem with my iPad was, even apps like Instagram would like like iPhone apps. How much more popular does it need to be before it gets some love?

Just a quick thought from a multi-platform app developer: I have no intention of optimizing my app for a vertical sidebar layout. Even if the layout isn't optimized for the Duo and I face criticism for it, the market is simply too small to justify the effort.

Samsung lets you choose the aspect ratio if you don't like how a particular app fits all its elements. Frankly, I haven't had an issue with any app, at least on the book-style Folds.
