T-Mobile is slowly becoming the wireless equivalent of cable where you get a good price the first year or so and then after that, the price goes way up and the only way to save money is to switch to a different company.

I've been on a MVNO for over 10 years. Wouldn't go back to a "full blown" carrier unless the price was the same without any strings.

I just need talk, text, data, coverage. Not free this or that, Netflix, HBO Max and all the other nonsense they throw in.

I have been with Comcast for internet since 2008. Every 2 years, my locked-in price expires and goes up a little, so I call in and threaten to leave for Google Fiber, or some other fiber carrier. They say 'hold on, I may have a special I can offer you'. They put me on hold, and when they return I have a faster speed, and lower price, for 2 more years. I honestly wish wireless service was the same, a simple phone call to lower the price for 2 years.

"T-Mobile has a fabled identity that it now seems eager to shed."

Gee, ya think? Let's review what that fabled identity is: T-Mo has had horrible service up until they purchased Sprint. So that previous identity was, you only get T-Mo if you don't have a good credit score (The other carriers won't give you post-paid service with bad credit), or if you are so poor that you can't afford the good service that Verizon offers. So, of course they don't want to be 4th place any more.

But after the Sprint merger, all they did was raise their prices for the same bad service. I just had a friend ask me 2 days ago, 'what carrier should I use? T-Mo doesn't work at my house and neither does AT&T.' The choice is pretty clear to me, if price is now the same, switch to a carrier that actually has good signal.
