I fully expect more iPhone Folding phones to sell than Galaxies because I think iPhone buyers are gullible easily tempted status chasing people. They'll happily drop $2000 on a folding phone chasing clout. I think very lowly of iPhone owners

So then what do you think of people paying $2099 for a Z Fold 8 Ultra, or those folks who bought the first Z Fold 8’s at $1899 who are now seeing the Z Fold 8 discounted $300 not 5 weeks into sales?

People have more confidence in Samsungs Foldable offering than Apples because Samsung is a proven Foldable maker. They've been releasing them for years. This is Apples 1st Foldable. No matter how good it may appear for a 1st attempt, it's bound to have issues, and there will be skepticism regarding it. Apple has to prove that it can make a Foldable that is at least on par with what is out today. Especially at that price. Now, will it sell well? I believe so. There are Apple users that definitely want an iOS powered Foldable. However, I have been noticing a growing number of Apple users on various social media platforms that have been saying that they will not be getting the iPhone Duo. Whether this will translate into something that affects the sales of the Duo remains to be seen. I've seen iPhone users swear that they weren't going to upgrade to the latest model, only to go out and grab the latest model.

Most of the Apple user comments fall into:

1) not interested in a foldable, I’m sticking with my current iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, even 12’s and 11’s.

2) I’m not paying $2000 for the Duo although it looks interesting, if I’m updating, I’m buying the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max instead, less expensive, better Cameras, better “value”.

3) I can’t decide between the iPhone 18 Pro Max or Duo, so I’ll have to wait till I can see one personally and then decide.

4) I really like the Duo, been waiting long time for Apple to bring a Foldable iPhone out.

5) I really like the Duo but am wary of first gen products so I’ll wait for 2nd or 3rd gen Duo’s. My current iPhone will keep going till then.

6) I’m waiting for the Duo Pro with FaceID, Pro level cameras and optical zoom, and a little more thickness won’t bother me. Take my money!

Apple got Apple users attention. Considering current Foldables market share of only 18M/1.270B or just 1.4%, if Apple is to sell 5M+ out of 250M in 2026, that’s just 2% out of 100 buyers. I think Apple will clear that for rest of 2026 pretty easily, assuming no production constraints. If there are constraints, sales and deliveries move into early 2027.

I want to know how Apple will spin the dropin Pro Max sales because the most hardcore fanatics will be buying the duo instead

There is no spin, if Apple’s Duo cannibalizes 5M Pro Max sales, it’s perfectly ok. Why? Because the Duo will add $700-$900 in additional income per Duo sale of the lost Pro Max sale, adding about $4.5B in additional iPhone revenues. But remember, there will be people who will buy a Duo just because it’s a Duo, so they will be additional sales not at the expense of the PM.

Apple doesn’t care if it cannibalizes its own sales, selling iPhones is the whole deal, whichever ones people want.

1st gen iPhone products are always lacking whilst they try to catch up with the market. Samsung and Android now cover the dual screen setup well after several years. I do expect the iPhone duo to 'validate' the market for foldable, but I would wait for a future iteration where more software makes use of the screens and the 1st gen issues are ironed out.

I have a Fold, but I am rooting for Apple. Competition is good!

I used to think it'd be good too... But the increased competition hasn't helped keep prices down, nor has it helped with innovation.

I don't think either is going to sell incredibly well - especially this year. One might sell more than the other, but at the end of the day, I think sales will slump for the foreseeable future. Too many other issues plaguing the world for people to have the expendable income to buy something at the price equivalent of 2 phones right now.

I see your point but it will cannibalize sales of the slab iPhones, so it's a pyrhic victory at the expense of slab iPhones

That’s the iPhone unit sales counting perspective, and for many, it’s important. OTOH, Tim Cook advised analysts to not focus on just sales numbers, but pay attention to the real results - revenue. Yes, that’s when Apple introduced the iPhone X which pierced the $1000 barrier and stopped reporting sales numbers, but revenues increased despite slightly lower sales.

Apple over the last 2 years has managed to grow sales and Average sales prices meaning iPhone revenues grew by double digits last year, and likely to do the same for 2026. With the split of Duo/Pro/Pro Max, it’s hard to compare cleanly with YoY Q3 and Q4 revenues but I suspect Q3 iPhone revenues will be higher by 10-14% while Q4 may be higher by 8-9%, but spreading the 18/Air 2 and 18e to Q1/Q2 spring 2027 will likely boost revenues there by double digits compared to YoY 2026.

its an interesting gambit for Apple.

meanwhile, in Q2 2026, despite leading with 60.6M sales, Samsung Mobile MX division swung from a $2.3B profit in Q2 2025 to a -$500M First Time Ever profit LOSS because of high memory costs from ironically their cousins at Samsung Semiconductor Memory. Memory made big profits, Mobile takes the loss. Q3 promises to be not a loss due to profitable Foldables sales, but profits still may be slimmer than last year, we’ll see. Samsung MX said they would try to protect their profitability, possibly by price hikes in the lower midrange and budget tiers they sell and accept lower total sales but be more profitable overall.

I have had 3 folds so far, all from Samsung. They are really good phones. I've been away from Apple for years. I left because of the closed garden. But it is that closed garden that will be the key to Apple's victory in the foldable world. Apple has the better product in quality and software. This is the key! IP rating killer, better build and strong build, better camera quality, Vapor chamber, and 46 hours of battery life for video playback. These alone would prove the point. But when you take the software that Apple keeps so close to its chest and make it so it scales perfectly with the Duo, this is so much better. Apple's true enemy is coming from within for the first time of thier existance. Apple's true hate for the Duo will come from iPhone 18 Pro users. Apple created a flagship phone called the 18 Pro and got everyone to buy into it, only to release another model that has more excitement and new gimmicks than the flagship model. This will not sit well with the purist of Iphone users. They want their phone to be looked on as truly the best and because it looks identical to the last ..that means they can't impress people from a distance with their iPhone, not like the Duo will. And this will make them jealous and make their choice feel pointless, and that doesn't work well with the Iphone fanboys and Fangirls.
