To think Mkbhd made a video just recently about the inherent risks of si/c batteries painting Samsung, Apple and Google as the safe alternatives...

Lithium ion batteries are inherently volatile and are prone to fire/exploding period. Doesn't matter the phone brand. This is why US law limits the allowed size for shipping a LI-ion batteries to less than 530o mah each. As long as they are used this will happen again and again. However, the fact is that the occurrences of this happen are miniscule. Given there are literally 100s of millions of Li-ion batteries in use even if 100 per year exploded that would mean over 99.99999% are reliable over their usable life.

None of the phones in this article use si/c Samsung only started using it the new Folds...

This is rather unfortunate. I am definitely hoping that its a dud Samsung copy because its unusual first question I have is was it an incredibly hot day outside? Second is did he have recent repairs done or did he live where anyone could have unauthorized access to his device. While we all want to play it safe there are real dangers in having house guests not invited through the front door. Hot and humid environments could lead to excess moisture but it's not enough to cause an explosion this bad. An excelerant always has trace marks and spill patterns.

When I would drive and I had issues with winding down my windows we accidently left an app open and then set the phone on the chair facing the sunlight. It did get hot but a quick power off button and dash to a cooler environment stopped mine from overheating. Maybe it was on standby, maybe an app was open using the processor more than usual. We have a habit of optimizing every time I close an app which frees up memory and closes any background processes that could heat up the processor. While this is the first case let's get more in depth information about the scenario before we judge. Could be a battery issue, could be a ventilation block.

Lastly won't it explode outwards not inwards? Seems like Hammer Time to me. Another anti Samsung by my phone advert?
