Discussion - Apple unveils the iPhone 18 Pro duo with a big camera breakthrough and small price hike

Its not the 1st phone to do VA. Nokia did it almost 2 decades ago and Samsung S9 did it last decade. Recently Huawei phones have had them with huge sensor as well. So no "breakthrough" here.

Breakthrough of what? Those SMALL camera sensors still lag miles behind the 1" Xiaomi Monsters with the incredible LOFIC as well. Just another nothing burger from Apple for the 10th year in a row.

Make sure when you write an article show this dual aperture camera taking pics vs Samsjng. Samsing was only 12MP at the time, so a 48MP one should do better, but I'm not holding my breath seeing the size of the lens is about the same. Which means they are small, and the high pixel will just create a sharper image, but not actually better.

If you just have a good telephone lens or zoom lens, you won't need dual aperture.

Hopefully Samsung doesn't waste time going back to it.

Good luck with selling only 2 models. At the new prices, that's gonna be alot to swallow outside the US.

Since Covid, these release events have really been boring. No one is doing anything exciting. The last exciting thing was folding. That was 8 years ago now. AI is the new.buzzword and it literally means nothing.

The writer has nerve to say, the count the S9 and S10 with Dual Aperture lenses.

Talking about Apple would be 1st if it wasnt for Samsung.

That is false.

Also here is the fact. The original company that put a dual aperture lenses into a smartphone was Samsung with the S9. No other phone ever had this capability.

And with today's zoom lenses, we don't need it because today's cameras are powerful enough for you to manually adjust the aperture.

I cant remember how the pics looked from the S9, but I remember it being a cool idea on paper.

As far as I know, Samsung was the only OEM to make a phone with a dual aperture lense. Nokia never made a smartphone until Microsoft came in and killed Nokia off only to fail with the Lumia series.

Those phones had great cameras using Carl Zeiss lens, but none ever featured dual aperture.

The A20 Pro is truly impressive.

I do remember a downside to dual aperture cameras thst came up later.

The camera natively supports 2 different focal lengths. When you try to zoom in or put, the camera can onky use one of th3 lengths to hopefully get a desired shot.

A camera with a better zoom lenses, will allow you to adjust thr aperture and get a better result because you can dial in with more increments as you adjust the aperture.

This is the same effect you get with a DSLR.

If you can control the aperture, then you are forced to allow the camera to decide what it can see or focus on vs you getting to really choose.

The aperture also is really small, which means it will be terrible for pics in low light.

I'm gonna go back and look at SuperSaf's S9 review where he tests the camera.

At 48MP the iPjone should give a sharper image than the S9 did. But if it is only offloading the photo at 12MP then th3 result will be similar because the sensors are similar in size.

I wouldn't be surprised if these were just leftovers from the S9 tweaked a bit.
